- <p> DIED. LUCIA POPP, 54, opera singer; of a brain tumor; in Munich.
- With her bright, nimble, smooth soprano, Popp interpreted a
- remarkable range of composers, from the 18th century's Mozart
- to the 20th's Strauss. Born in Czechoslovakia, Popp came into
- her own in one incredible year, 1963, when she made her professional
- debut and soon thereafter her debut in Vienna as Barbarina in
- The Marriage of Figaro. Her performance in that comparatively
- small role prompted conductor Herbert von Karajan to ask her
- to join the Vienna Staatsoper. The association between Popp
- and the Staatsoper endured throughout her lifetime, and she
- eventually received the prized professional title of Kammersangerin
- (court singer). Popp made her first appearance at London's Covent
- Garden in 1966 and debuted at the Metropolitan Opera the following
- year. An artist on more than 75 recordings, she was known for
- her interpretations of Handel, Mahler, Janacek and Puccini,
- and for her impeccably crafted but nevertheless expressive performances
- as a recitalist.
